Aaaaaah Italy…..the gorgeous Tuscan villa, the marble fountains, the manicured gardens , the lake views ….the dolce vita of it all! WAIT, we’re not in Italy? We’re only 50 miles from New York? Surprisingly, yes.
Glenmere Mansion, a hilltop Italianate estate set on 150 acres in the Hudson Valley (one-and-a-half hours’ drive from New York City), delivers an upper-crusty, “Downton Abbey”-like fix. There’s plenty to do — you can stroll the gardens designed by Edith Wharton’s niece, admire the original frescoes or read in the beautiful library, with its modern art collection.
Mindy Terry, a partner in Creative Spa Concepts who currently lives in Thailand, developed an extensive spa menu for Glenmere that offers traditional Turkish treatments and bespoke beauty, including a Mediterranean salt wrap and couture facials. Guests can choose their own product blends, with scents like Italian orange, wild Indonesian ginger and French lavender.
The Spa at Glenmere Mansion features a marble-clad Moroccan hammam and bathhouse with a “Costa Rican” waterfall/ vitality pool and rooms for herbal steam, cool mist, dry sauna and a computerized Swiss shower.
The Glenmere Spa treatment rooms (there are five, including a duet suite with fireplace) are all “en-suite,” with private changing room, toilette, steam shower and vitality tub. The spa also includes a Moroccan-themed nail salon, relaxation library with “tea and tonics bar” and Glenmere’s signature “Blue Shutters” gift boutique.
A world-class sanctuary for the senses, the Gardens at Glenmere, comprising the estate’s original 150 acres, are destined to become a modern tribute to traditional Italian gardens, with terraced vistas, numerous fountains, and a chic pool pavilion.
Glenmere was originally fashioned as a Tuscan villa with a central open cortile and majestic interior details, including marble-columned porticoes and sweeping interior and exterior staircases. A painstaking restoration now returns Glenmere to its original magnificence, with flowing rooms and broad terraces all centered on the refurbished cortile. Original architectural details have been preserved throughout, and the landscape once more offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and tranquil Glenmere Lake.
Glenmere offers 18 guest accommodations, including deluxe and superior bedrooms, junior suites, and five premium suites. No two are alike; all are unforgettable.
Noted interior designer Scott Snyder has embraced Glenmere’s historic aesthetic and married it seamlessly with contemporary comfort. One-of-a-kind furnishings, sumptuous beds, and fine antiques combine with spectacular art from a private collection to create eclectic spaces for relaxation and pleasure. Most rooms have working fireplaces, and many offer terraces with open views of Glenmere’s grounds and gardens, as well as the lake and hills beyond. All guest accommodations feature custom-designed Italian linens, sumptuous marble baths with heated floors, state-of-the-art Bluetooth-compatible AV systems, featuring large flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docking stations, and high-speed Internet access.
Glenmere’s intimate dining room for unforgettable evenings. Candlelit tables sparkle among a collection of antiques and modern furnishings, surrounded by custom-made, hand-painted eglomise panels depicting the hills of Tuscany. Magnificent French doors open onto a broad terrace for fine weather, while a massive Italianate fireplace is center-stage for cooler nights. The finest local ingredients are featured here, along with the treasures of Glenmere’s wine cellar.
The cozy tavern is a perfect spot to hide away with a book or chat over a game of chess. Full bar service, light lunch fare, and informal evening meals are available here, to be enjoyed by the light of the fireplace.
