Halcyon Gallery opened the doors to its magnificent new gallery at 144-146 New Bond Street on 5 December 2011, with a major exhibition by internationally celebrated artist Dale Chihuly.
Chihuly is widely regarded as the most exciting and spectacular artist working in contemporary glass, credited with elevating the medium from the realm of craft to groundbreaking fine art. A prodigiously prolific artist, whose work balances content with thorough investigations in to the properties of glass, Chihuly began working with the material at a time when reverence for glass-making and technique was paramount.
Known as a pioneer in studio glassblowing, the 71-year-old artist created several new installations for the exhibit, which spans the gallery’s three floors and also features elaborate Chihuly chandeliers and vibrant marine creatures from his Seaforms collection dating back to the ’80s. In addition to glass sculptures, the exhibit includes some of Chihuly’s lesser-known drawings and paintings, which are just as vibrant as his hand-blown glass pieces.
Glass blower Dale Chihuly talks about his work and his significant impact on the Studio Glass movement.
